Part 1 Words and Expressions

1.die off 相继死去；

2.take to

3.wound up: If someone is wound up, they are very tense and nervous or angry. 很紧张的; 生气的

Part 2 Summary

The war launched by drought has caused the people untold suffering. To eke out a living, Mairam, Laila, and Rasheed sell eveything. Rasheed gets fired and gives vent to his anger by maltreating Mariam and Laila. When the money runs out, hunger begin to cast a pall over their lives.
